Original blue cloth, elaborately stamped in gilt including vignettes on covers. A.e.g. xii, 411, [1], 23, [1], 8 (ads) pages. Twenty-one hand-colored lithographs, including frontispiece. Slight wear to extremities, top hinge cracked but sound, occasional light foxing. A very good or better copy. FIRST EDITION of the book which Elwes described as "simply a record of travels, undertaken for no purpose but my own amusement" (p. v). The colored lithographic views are from Elwes' sketches of stops on his tour, including Rio de Janeiro (shown above), Buenos Aires, Honolulu, Hong Kong, Canton and Singapore. "He relates with simplicity all that he saw and noted . . . , and describes places with great accuracy. His work is full of picturesque details and interesting information about the places he visited. The author's drawings . . . are very good" (Borba de Moraes). Abbey Travel 9.
