[ii], 4 pages [following each plate]; [ii], 4 [following each plate except "Tiger Island"], 6 pages [following "Tiger Island"]. Sixty engraved plates, thirty in each volume. Covers worn and stained. Light foxing of plates. First few plates in Volume I dampstained in outer margin, not affecting images. Very good. FIRST EDITION IN BOOK FORM. Elliot was a "captain in the royal navy and topographical draughtsman from 1822 to 1824" (DNB). His Views in the East was first published in parts from 1830 to 1833. The sixty engraved plates are predominantly of views in India, and are from sketches by Elliot "made on the spot in the years 1822, 1823, and 1824" (Vol. I, Preface). They include the Taj Mahal (shown above), Aurungzebe's Tomb and the Cave of Elephanta. "The descriptions of the Plates are selected from some of the best authorities that are to be met with on India subjects" (Id.). Cf. Ibrahim-Hilmy I, p. 221. BT000009.
